Wu-Tang Clan’s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin released as NFT
The post office Wu-Tang Clan’s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin released as NFT appeared first on Result.
Digital arts collective PleasrDAO has done the inevitable by publishing Wu-Tang Clanthe legendary album of Once upon a time in Shaolin as an NFT – although the only thing immediately available is a five-minute sampler.
The album is available for the equivalent of US$1 here. The original contract created by Wu-Tang Clan prohibited its owners from commercially exploiting the album until October 8, 2103, but Pleasr entered into an agreement for each NFT purchase to speed up the countdown by 88 seconds. At the time of publication, a total of $28 million is expected to be spent to unlock the album.
It’s worth noting that PleasrDAO likely hasn’t finished negotiating with the band and producer Cilvaringz to secure full rights to Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. According to DecryptPleasr has only acquired the rights to 16 of the album’s 31 tracks and will “share increasingly larger tracks from this curated library with buyers of the encrypted album over time.”
PleaseDAO announced their plans for Once Upon a Time in Shaolin on Wednesday June 12 after having been obtained a temporary restraining order against the former owner Martin Shkreli for copying the album and reading it online without permission.
“It’s time to bring music to the people,” PleasrDAO wrote. “Pleasr worked secretly with the original artists and producer to release Once Upon a Time in Shaolin to the public. Tomorrow we will invite you [to] join us in this quest. Faithful to its historical origins, it will not be a normal album sale but an artistic experience.
Earlier this week, PleasrDAO filed a lawsuit against Shkreli for live-streaming Once Upon a Time in Shaolin several times since. the group acquired the album in 2021. Judge Pamela Chen has since temporarily barred Shkreli from streaming or releasing copies of the album, saying PleasrDAO is “likely to succeed on the merits” of the suit “or to raise very serious questions regarding the merits of the forfeiture order, violations of the Defense of Trade Secrets Act.
From Saturday June 15, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin will take place played to the public as part of an exhibition at the Australian Museum of Old and New Art.

Our master plan is to deliver music to the public in a way that honors and remunerates the Wu-Tang Clan while circumventing the streaming oligopoly; every action we take is in service of this mission.
