The Mt. Gox hack was one of the first major cryptocurrency attacks. In 2011, hackers made off with 25,000 Bitcoins worth about $400,000. At the time the exchange handled nearly 70% of all Bitcoin transactions.
In 2014, Mt. Gox suffered another attack that resulted in the loss of nearly 650,000 of its customers’ Bitcoin and approximately 100,000 of its own. This amounted to about 7% of all bitcoins in circulation at the time, worth about $473 million.
Tokyo-based Mt. Gox, once the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange, filed for bankruptcy in 2014, leaving creditors with 45 billion yen ($414 million) in debt. Recently, the exchange transferred almost 9 million dollars, perhaps to repay his creditors.
