Tequila Don Julio Launches NFT-Backed Barrel Finishes on BlockBar
Don Julio Tequila is expanding its 1942 range with five new barrel-aged expressions, which will be sold exclusively through an auction hosted by Block Bara marketplace for spirits-based NFTs.
This release marks the first limited edition variation of the Don Julio 1942, which is typically aged for up to 32 months in American white oak barrels. The new releases are finished in ex-bourbon, ruby port, Portuguese Madeira wine, orange wine and Crémant barrels.
Each expression is limited to one barrel, equivalent to forty cases or 240 bottles.

A piece of Luxe-Tequila history
The auction is now live and starts at $35,000 per barrel, with the five highest bidders each receiving 240 bottles of the expression of their choice. This auction will close on June 20.
The sale involves NFTs for ownership and distribution management, and the barrels will be stored at the Don Julio distillery until March 25, 2025. On that date, each barrel NFT will convert into forty individual cases of NFT, which can be resold via Block Bar. Physical bottles should be available by mid-2025.
Sophie Kelly, senior vice president of global tequila and mezcal categories at Diageo, said: “We recognize that for many, luxury tequilas are seen as an extension of a person’s lifestyle. So we are responding to the demand from potential buyers and trendsetters not only to own an extremely rare and super luxurious tequila, but to own a piece of the history and heritage of Don Julio Tequila.
