Midnight Societythe studio behind the shooter Extraction Dead fallhas launched an update to the game exclusively for its NFT holders. This is the first major move by the studio since co-founder and popular streamer Dr. Disrespect was ousted from the company, after being accused of discussed inappropriately with a minor.

This limited release only allows players to test the game by playing a team deathmatch mode, with each team playing as either a human Claw or a metal RAT (Robotic Acquisition Teams). These two characters have very distinct and contrasting playstyles thanks to varying abilities, movement speed, and more.

Other differences include RATs moving fast but having little health, while Claws are slower but much more resilient. Robotic RATs are an evolution of the “Synthetics” present in previous Deaddrop versions.

Other new features include a revamped movement system, improved gameplay, and a new “adrenaline” system for Claws that grants bonuses based on in-game actions.

This update is exclusively available for owners of NFT Founders Access Passwhich originally sold for $50 each in November 2022. Players who purchased Dedrop via the latest $20 Tower Key passes, which are not NFTs, currently cannot access them.

In the official blog postThe team stresses that this is a “development version”: players will encounter bugs and are encouraged to give feedback. But that’s the general mood around Dedrop, which launched in a minimalist format and has gradually grown based on advice from early supporters.

This update comes less than a month after Dr. Disrespect (aka Guy Beahm) was accused of inappropriately chatting with a minor. After Midnight Society conducted its own investigation, the company announced that it was “to end” his relationship with Beahm. Since then, Dr. Disrespect admitted of having conversations with a minor that “leaned too much toward the inappropriate,” although he said “nothing illegal happened.”

Some players and industry observers believed that Dedrop was “dead in the water” now that the popular streamer had been dropped by the company, given his strong presence in the game’s marketing and visual style. But many members of the game’s loyal community remained optimistic about future updates to the game.

In the future, as the recent blog post explains, players will be able to play as either RAT or Claws in the main extraction shooter game mode. This development build is a way for Midnight Society to refine the RAT vs. Claw interactions, creating two distinct playstyles.

RATs are powered by a battery that drains as they roam and scavenge the world. While players can recharge their batteries in a variety of ways, it is recommended that RATs seek out mining as early as possible.

When they land, RATs are given randomly assigned “loaner” weapons and cannot extract any loot outside of “dust,” the in-game currency. This makes them the least risky playthrough choice. Meanwhile, Claws spawn with their own gear and can extract anything they pick up: high risk, high reward.

Normally, DeDrop updates are deployed as “Snapshots”, with the latest major update available in October 2023with the improved Snapshot 7.5 version following in January. In February blog postMidnight Society has explained that it plans to roll out fewer updates this year with a higher overall level of polish.
