Château d’Esclans and BlockBar sell NFT barrel
Producer Château d’Esclans and blockchain marketplace BlockBar are selling a non-fungible token (NFT) barrel of Garrus rosé via an online auction.
The Garrus 2023 single barrel is split into four quarters and will be available via BlockBar’s new grading technology. Once the wine is ready for bottling, each owner of the quarter barrel – approximately 150 liters – will choose to have the liquid bottled in either a regular format, Magnums, Jeroboams and even a six-liter Methuselah.
Buyers will have the right to resell their share of the wine until June 21 on BlockBar’s marketplace, with potential owners also required to submit their bottling requests before this date.
If owners choose to send their bottles to BlockBar’s storage facility, their Quarter Barrel NFT will be converted into NFTs representing ownership of the requested bottle sizes and quantities, the producer said.
Experience
The four barrel owners will also receive invitations to bring three additional guests for a day with Château d’Esclans founder Sacha Lichine in Provence during the fall harvest period.
This experience includes a VIP tour of the cellar and vineyards as well as a tasting with the winemaker. The name of each owner will also be personalized on the barrel accompanied by a photo in the barrel cellar.
Premiumization
Chateau d’Esclans founder Sacha Lichine said of the move that the producer was happy to “demonstrate the noblest side of rosé with Garrus” and that the premiumization of the rosé category was “only beginning.” .
He said: “The innovation of auctioning a barrel of our best rosé for the first time on BlockBar is very exciting,” he added.
BlockBar’s Jamie Ritchie said Sacha Lichine created “a global rosé revolution that reverberated around the world.”
He said: “At Château d’Esclans, he reinvented the definition of world-class rosé, from the ubiquitous Whispering Angel to Garrus, the most exclusive and serious rosé ever produced.
“It will be offered on BlockBar as part of a new leaderboard auction, which brings a fun and interesting pricing mechanism to the sale, making it another first of its kind.”
In 2020, db editor-in-chief Patrick Schmitt reviewed Garrus in a series of videos about the producer.
