A Look at WorldCoin, the Cryptocurrency and Identity Project Designed for the AI Age – BitKE
WorldCoin is described as an open source protocol or system created to allow everyone to access the global economy.
According to its promoters, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, it is designed to be decentralized, meaning its oversight and decision-making will ultimately rest with its global community of users.
The system is made up of various tools that work together to help it achieve its mission. These include:
- World Identity – a digital humanity passport designed to let you prove that you are unique and human on the Internet while keeping your identity private
- The Orbe – a customized, cutting-edge device that privately and securely verifies humanity and uniqueness using an iris code
- $WLD Token – a digital token to be distributed free of charge to people, both for utility and future governance, just for being a unique individual
- Worldwide application – a fully self-custodial app created and operated by project collaborator Tools for Humanity that enables payments, purchases and transfers globally using digital assets, stablecoins and traditional currencies
In an online world with increasingly advanced artificial intelligence (AI), WorldCoin, through World ID, can play an important role in demonstrating humanity.
WorldCoin parent organizations
The project is currently supported by several contributors, including the WorldCoin Foundation and Tools for Humanity.
- THE WorldCoin Foundationa non-profit entity, is dedicated to cultivating and expanding the WorldCoin community to self-sustainability. Its efforts include managing community grant initiatives, releasing critical project technologies as open source, and facilitating user participation in the governance of the protocol.
- Tools for Humanity (TFH) is described as a global technology company founded to accelerate the transition to a more just economic system. He led the initial development of WorldCoin and continues to build tools and help support the protocol, as well as manage Worldwide application.
How to participate in WorldCoin
Step 1: Download the World App
Download the World App allows a person to set up their own Worldcoin account, hold and verify their World ID, and access a digital wallet connected to digital and traditional currencies. World ID verification is free, private, and open to all humans over the age of 18.
Step 2: Verify your Global ID
Verifying your World ID on a sphere lets you prove you’re human and unique, according to WorldCoin, and the project is supporting a growing number of integrated apps like Discord, Shopify, Telegram, and Reddit. This means you can authenticate yourself to these apps using your World ID.
Global ID verification locations are operated by WorldCoin Operators and can be found on the WorldCoin website or in the World app. No operators are listed from Africa, although WorldCoin does has conducted thousands of audits in countries like Kenya.
According to WorldCoin, no information such as name, email, phone number, etc. is required to download and use World App or to verify and use World ID. Additionally, all images used to verify an individual’s World ID are deleted by default.
